The Ministry of Public Health (MINSANTE), through its Department of Family Health, organized a workshop to validate the National Strategic Plan aimed at eliminating vertical transmission of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B. This event took place at Djeuga Palace in Yaoundé from February 19 to 20, 2025, under the chairmanship of Prof. Louis Richard NJOCK, Secretary General of MINSANTE.
The workshop brought together national and international experts, community actors, and technical and financial partners. Together, they worked on developing priority strategies and interventions targeting pregnant and breastfeeding women, their partners, as well as children and adolescents.
A Public Health Challenge in Cameroon
Cameroon is among the 30 countries accounting for 89% of new HIV infections worldwide. According to UNAIDS, it is also one of the 10 countries with the highest rates of pediatric HIV infections. Despite progress in Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT), major challenges remain in achieving the 95-95-95 targets by 2030.
The goal is to ensure that:
95% of pregnant women receive effective prenatal care.
95% of newborns are vaccinated against Hepatitis B.
A robust monitoring and evaluation system is in place to track the fight against these infections.
The Pillars of the National Strategic Plan
The validated National Strategic Plan is based on four main pillars:
Health promotion: Raising awareness and educating the population.
Prevention of infections: Early diagnosis, vaccination, and treatment for pregnant women.
Integrated patient care: Universal access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and medical care for all.
Governance and leadership: Strengthening policies and funding for effective implementation.
Next Steps
Integrating expert recommendations.
Budgeting interventions and translating the plan into English.
Officially presenting the validated document to stakeholders.
The implementation of this strategic plan will mark a significant step towards the triple elimination of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B transmission in Cameroon. MINSANTE is committed to mobilizing all stakeholders to ensure better health for future generations.
