Diabetes, Under Incubation in Africa, Remains A Time-Bomb!

Updated: Jul 16, 2024

From our previous post in which we looked back into the past as far as diabetes is concerned, together with the following figures, we have no doubt that the diasease is under incubation in Africa.

An estimated 24 million people were living with diabetes in Africa in 2021, with more than half (54%) of the people living with diabetes undiagnosed. The disease is predicted to increase to 33 million cases in 2030, and to 55 million by 2045 in this region.

These figures are very alarming, yet it appears the African popluations are less bothered about what can happen to their health in the next 6 to 21 years, especially in a continent with a health system with a less confident future.

Before the 80s, diabetes was not a common disease in China as they lived on traditionally produced diet. It was the same with Korea, and US. As these countries economy took off in the early 80s, the populations shifted their diet to a more refined and fastfood diet, including diarry products. 40 years later, diabetes and chronic disease rates have escalated, and they have learned their lesson. Today, with increasing education about health, and poor diet as a major risk factor, they are looking for all possible ways to go back to their traditional diets. Together with their strong health systems and technology, as figures are on the rise in Africa, they have a better control over the disease.

STOP THE TIME-BOMB

Today, Africans have to learn from the experience of the above countries to STOP diabetes which is considered a silent killer by WHO. If not, the disease remains a dangerous disaster under incubation, and a time bom, ready to explode anytime soon. Important measures to revert the situation include;

  1. Education about diabetes and health.

  2. Education about diet and eating habit - fasting.

  3. Education about hydration.

  4. Education about physical activities.

  5. Regular monitoring (screening).

The above five measures form the foundation of our DREAM Program, the secret to reverting the increasing trend in Africa, and the key to switch off the incubation machine and the African time-bomb.

Suprisingly, education is the most emphasized amongst all the measures. Getting the right education and putting the correct measures into practice does not only prevent the populations from developing this disease, but also heals, even without any drugs.
